Hidden gem alert!
I don’t usually venture past Wheaton Mall when I’m in the area, but today I’m so glad I did. I stopped by Maria’s and got to try their bean and cheese pupusas and plantain empanadas—and wow, what an experience.

From the moment I walked in, I was greeted warmly and treated amazingly by the cashier. The place was spotless, which is always a huge plus in my book.

Now, let’s get into the food. The pupusas were great—classic, flavorful, and hit all the right notes. But let me tell you… the plantain empanada stole the show. This was authenticity at its finest! The homemade taste was unmatched, and honestly, I haven’t found anything like it in this area.

If you’re looking for a spot with next-level authentic flavors, Maria’s is the place. I’ll definitely be back.

Received warm welcome walking in. The staff quickly did the checking and explained the ingredients of the sweet empanada and pupusa. While waiting, found they having interesting table settings for El Salvador and holiday season as well. The sweet empanada was warm and tasted great.

First time here. The menu was pretty extensive had good variety. The prices for food are higher, but also in the middle of downtown Wheaton.

The portions were large . We ordered a few things to share and while we were there, Happy hour was one which meant that bottle beers were only $3.

Cocktail drinks were overpriced at $16

I went for dinner on a Friday night. The restaurant's atmosphere was disappointing. The place was very dark, illuminated by Christmas lights only, and played very loud music. The dark space, loud music, and sparce patronage gave the overall impression of a lonely bar, not a cafe or restaurant. The server was very friendly, helpful, and attentive, so I rate the service highly. I ordered the birria tacos and chicken milanesa. The milanesa was excellent, the tacos and black beans were just OK, the birria consume was spicy but lacking flavor, and the rice was unseasoned and uninteresting. Overall, the food was mixed between great and uninspired.

Hay otros sitios en el área pero con un tremendo bullicio, alcohol etc. no apto para ir en familia.

First let me start of by saying, I have eaten in so many restaurants that serve salvadoran breakfast and carne azada. I have been disappointed by one but this one will be the second. It takes a lot for me to leave a bad review but the carne asada here was not seasoned. The meat was not what they use for a carne asada. Too hard. Not what a typical carne asada would be.

Now for the breakfast. I order the typical rice and beans with huevos and chorizos and plantain. If you look at others pictures, you’ll see that they have fresh plantains, cream. Mine was more of tostones and they threw a piece of cheese in there.

I don’t know if it was a bad day that I went but certainly not satisfied with their food.

I did bring it up the restaurant and the owner was kind enough to offer different options so I won’t be left with a bad taste.

One thing I did like was their orchata.

Found a hole in the wall gem! The birria tacos were very tasty and filling. Also had the plantain empanada for dessert, prepared fresh and hot. The hot chocolate is good on a cold day and the service is friendly. Very fairly priced as well. Definitely will return.

This is a small spot in Wheaton with good customer service and even better food. It was giving me a small family run business which are some of my favorite to support. There is some seating inside and plenty of seating outside (shared amongst other nearby restaurants).
I ordered the lomo saltado (my favorite dish ever in life) and a papusa (I think pork?). The lomo saltado was delish. It was mad flavorful and the beef was super tender. Im pretty sure the fries were made fresh. The green sauce to put on top kicked the flavor up a bit. The papsua was good too.
All in all, the food was delicious and I will be back to explore more of the menu.
