Update:

The review below was posted Saturday, June 29. Today, July 1, Matt Zacher, owner of CRE, called me, acknowledged an over-zedalous (my words) employee had been wrong and offered to refund a portion of the bill. We agreed on an amount and the bill has been adjusted to my satisfaction.

Matt's handling of my complaint illustrates integrity and good business practice. With Matt in charge I will continue to patronize and support CRE

Our renter in Canby called me at our winter residence in California to report that our Cub Cadet lawn tractor had a broken drive belt. I had replaced the belt myself once before so was familiar with the operation. We discussed it, concluded he should be able to replace the belt and ordered a new one online. On a Thursday our renter called me and announced he had been unable to complete the belt replacement and had contacted CRE to finish the job. I called CRE, got a quote of $215.84 total; $90 to pickup and return the tractor and a $125 one hour labor minimum. The $.84 was some sort of tax. I gave them a credit card number to cover the charges.

After the weekend the renter called CRE to see when he might expect delivery of the repaired tractor and was told there would be additional diagnostic charges of something over $50 and the tractor wouldn’t be returned until July 8. We decided we couldn’t wait that long so the renter called CRE and had the tractor returned the following Thursday. With me coaching via phone the renter was able to finish installing the new belt and put the tractor back to work.

I had seen the $215.84 was already charged to my credit card so called CRE on Friday and asked if I could expect to see a credit since they didn’t end up doing the work. I was told no, that the $125 was a non-refundable diagnostic fee. I reminded the person at CRE that I had been told the $125 was a minimum labor charge, which I would understand if they actually did any work, but they did nothing and there was nothing to diagnose. The person then said they had to diagnose the problem and look up parts. I pointed out there was no problem to diagnose; it was a known broken belt. There were no parts to look up; the new belt was already installed around the driven pulley and through the idlers. All that needed to be done, as explained by the renter to CRE’s driver, was feed the belt around the drive pulley on the motor which, based on my earlier experience, should take all of 15 minutes but CRE did no work at all. The tractor was returned in the same condition as when it was picked up.

I grew up in Canby, have lived here for 80 years and try to support local businesses but will not be going back to one that charged me for work they didn’t do.

We had our D100 John Deere riding lawn more worked on at CRE and it had major carburetor and linkage issues, they replaced the carburetor and other service things we wanted done. We got it home and it wouldn’t idle on low, so we called and they sent a service guy out to us within the hour to fix the issue. We are very happy with Canby Rental and Equipment. Been going there for more than 40 years. And today proved that I will be going back for any of my yard machine needs. Everyone there was very nice and in great moods as if they love there job don’t see that anymore. Great job CRE

It was late Friday afternoon and I had a window to blow leaves before the next heavy rain. My blower would not work. My son had told me it was 18 years old and was done. I drove to Canby Rentals and told them I needed a blower. They were so helpful as I was not sure what blower I needed for property. They took the time to wait and talk with my son on the phone so I could replace at the same 650 level. They even assembled and tested!! I rushed home and got the leaves moved! Perfect model
And it works fabulously! Thank you everyone who helped me that evening!
